What is an ISBN and where can I get one?
ISBN stands for "International Standard Book Number". It is the order number under which your book can be found in shops and catalogues. You only need it if you want to publish a book. This also applies to e-books. If you only want to have books printed for yourself, you don't need an ISBN.
If you publish more than one type of book, we will give each one its own ISBN. You can see your ISBN under Settings > ISBN & Imprint.
I have my own ISBN. Can I also publish with this one?
Sure, no problem! You can publish your book with your own ISBNs and your own publisher. You enter your ISBNs under Settings > ISBN & Imprint on.
What information must my book contain?
Some mandatory information must be provided in every book. These belong in the so-called imprint. To make it easy for you, we have developed an imprint generator for you. With just a few clicks you can create a correct imprint, which you usually insert on the fourth page of the book.
You can find the imprint generator at the step Settings > ISBN & Imprint in your book project.
How long does it take to publish?
Before publication, we prepare your data and perform final checks. This usually takes 24 hours (excluding weekends). Your book can then be ordered immediately in the tredition shop. It usually takes 2-3 days until it is available in bookstores everywhere.
We produce e-books first before we publish them. This process usually takes 5-7 days.
Can I still correct errors after my book is published?
Yes, you can make free book updates at any time. We process the updated files and data immediately and send update notifications to all retail partners and printers.
How does the book update work?
A book update is a free update of your book. You can update the interior, the cover or the sales data (e.g. the description or the author's vita). For extensive changes to the text, you should make a new edition instead of a book update. On this page we describe the Differences between a new edition and a book update.
To start a book update, please open your book project. Then you will find a yellow round button with three dots at the bottom right. Click on it and select the menu item "Book update".
Then your book project is copied and a new version is created. With each new book update, the version number is incremented. You can update a book as often as you like. To view older versions, you can navigate with the arrow keys.
In the latest version you can make your desired changes. When you are done with it, you should go to the last step "Finish project" in the project editor and click the "Finish project" button.
To delete a book update click again on the yellow button with the three dots on this entry:
How does a new edition work?
You choose this if you want to make extensive changes to the text. You start a new edition under Projects -> Select project -> New edition.
When you have finished your new edition and want to publish it, we delete your old edition and inform the book trade about it. Immediately afterwards we publish the new edition. This all takes less than a day.
What's the difference between a new edition and a book update?
The term an edition comes from the time when all books were printed in "editions". This means that usually many thousands of copies were printed in one version and then sold piece by piece in bookstores. A new edition was printed when no more copies of the previous edition were available or the contents had changed significantly.
This is no longer necessary in modern times. At tredition, we print your book exclusively in the print-on-demand process: we only print a copy of your book once it has been ordered by a bookseller or from us in the tredition shop. So if you want to make changes to the content, a book update is perfectly sufficient.
For a new edition, a new ISBN is required. This means that your old edition is no longer available in bookshops. If you have positive reviews or star ratings at online retailers, they will disappear with your old edition. This would be very annoying in case of good reviews. So our tip is: check very carefully if you really need a new edition. Here are the differences:

What is tredition's imprint service?
When you publish content or information, you are responsible for it. This also applies to tredition when you publish your book with us or write content on your profile page. Anyone who publishes content, whether as a book or via a posting on a website, must identify themselves as responsible for the content in an imprint. The legally obligatory Contents of an imprint are part of a detailed article with us.
If you use the free imprint service from tredition, you will be using not your private address, but all legal issues regarding your published content will be sent directly to us. We will provide you with the correspondence for this in your account with the book project in question and inform you about it immediately by e-mail. We will only send you the information sent to us. You are responsible for the timely processing.
Other companies sometimes charge a lot of money for this service. At tredition, we provide this service for you free of charge!
I want to publish print with my own ISBN and files, but self-publish on Amazon. So not exclusive. Is that possible?
Yes, that is possible. We don't have any exclusivity with tredition. But you would have to check what the regulations are at Amazon. As far as we know, Amazon does not allow any other publications besides Amazon.
For us it is only important that you do not use the ISBN with which you publish with us somewhere else. Otherwise, retailers won't know where to get the book and chaos is inevitable. If you publish with tredition, your book will in any case also be listed and sold on Amazon. In addition, the print quality at Amazon is nowhere near as high as at tredition. Readers appreciate that very much. In this respect, apart from the legal problems with Amazon, you should consider how sensible this decision would be.
Orders
What are the shipping costs for my book?
For customers who buy a book in the tredition store at the normal retail price, there are no shipping costs.
For customers who buy copies of their own book project at a reduced store price (own copies), shipping costs (min. 2.99 euros) apply, depending on the weight and the delivery address. You can calculate the exact costs when you order your book.
How can I track my delivery?
You will receive a tracking link via email after your books have been shipped.
What payment methods are available?
Currently we offer the payment methods Paypal, Sofortüberweisung and credit card (Visa, Master, American Express). Soon (probably March 2022) we will also offer prepayment (payment by invoice).
Where can I see the status of an order?
Click on the avatar in the upper right corner and then on "Orders".
How can I order copies for myself?
On your dashboard, click on either "Projects" or the eye icon next to your current book projects.
Once you have clicked on "Projects", you will see the overview of your projects and you can click on the shopping cart icon for each book project.
After the click, the shopping cart will be opened directly. You can enter your desired quantity directly or click on "next discount level" to order the quantity that gives you the next best discount.
We currently still have the highest discount at 35%. However, since we currently receive monthly price increases from our printers, it is advisable to order now.
After that, just click on "Proceed to checkout" and you only need to enter your shipping address and proceed to payment.
How can I order my book online with an author discount?
You can buy copies of the books you have created as a book project at a reduced price. You can start the ordering process by clicking on your book project and then on the ruby-colored round button with the shopping cart. In the next step you can adjust the quantities and see the discount scale. The more copies you order, the lower the unit price will be.
Booksellers.
Why is my book offered at different prices?
There may be two reasons for this:
No fixed book priceYour book is offered by a retailer who is located in a country without fixed book prices. Only in countries with fixed book prices must a retailer sell a book at the price you set. However, there are exceptions here as well. For example, in some countries, fixed book prices only apply to books where the publisher or self-publisher is also based in the country, or they only apply to titles in the language of the country. In countries without fixed book prices, a retailer is free to decide at what price to offer books. We make sure that you always get the earnings you earn in the Project Calculator have set.
Price change delayedIf you make a price change to your book, e.g. in the case of a book update or a limited price promotion, we report this in good time to all our distribution partners and book directories. Many thousands of national and international booksellers access the catalogues of our distribution partners and book directories. We have no influence on how often these booksellers update their price lists.
Where will my book be available?
Every bookseller can order your book for interested book buyers from us or a book wholesaler. So every book buyer in the stationary book trade can order your book for himself.
It's a little different with online retailers. They decide themselves whether they actively display a book or not. They also decide for themselves whether they take a book "in stock" or only order it for a customer. With more than 5 million book titles available in German-speaking countries alone, it hardly makes sense to put them "in stock.
Particularly with new titles, booksellers wait to see how demand from book buyers develops. That is why these are presented with longer delivery times. We have no influence on the presentation of delivery times. It also annoys us when booksellers indicate a delivery time of three weeks when we usually print and deliver the books in 48 hours. We also have no influence on whether a bookseller offers a book for sale to book buyers at all. They are dealers and they decide themselves which book assortment they want to offer.
If your book has a longer delivery time at a bookseller, especially shortly after publication, or is possibly not offered at all, that is not a bad thing. There are plenty of other booksellers who will offer your book for quick delivery. It's best to refer all interested parties to your book in the tredition store anyway, since you'll earn more per sale.
How soon will my book be available in bookstores?
In the tredition store, your books can be ordered immediately after approval. In the book trade, it usually takes 2 to 4 days until the books are listed in catalogs and directories for the book trade. Every bookseller can then order your book either from us or from at least one wholesaler. However, most of the time booksellers wait to see if there is a demand for a newly published title before they "stock" it. Most books are only stocked to order for book buyers.
Is my book available in bookstores?
That depends on the bookshop itself. We can't force anyone to display a book. Booksellers decide independently which books they include in their assortment. Generally, booksellers include books in their assortment that they are convinced will meet with the interest of their readers.
Is my book also available in other countries?
If you want: Yes! You decide that yourself.
Printed books: If you want to offer your printed book in other countries, you will have a somewhat smaller selection of paper types and binding types to choose from, since not every paper type is available in every country, for example.
E-books: These are always available worldwide.
Where and how can a bookseller buy my book?
Two ways:
Directly from us: Booksellers can buy books directly from us via the usual ordering channels.
At wholesalers (bar assortments): All books that authors or book publishers publish with us are available at all major wholesalers.
A dealer doesn't carry my book. What can I do?
Look at him stunned! Any bookseller can order any book that has an ISBN. So there are no books that a bookseller cannot order.
All books published by tredition are available from wholesalers or directly from tredition and can therefore be ordered by booksellers without any problems. Ask the bookseller to look for your book in the catalog of his wholesaler. Then he will find it. There are several wholesalers. We offer your book project to every wholesaler. It is up to the wholesaler to decide whether to include your book project in his catalog or not. So if your bookseller can't find your book at one wholesaler, he can order it at another wholesaler.
Why do some shops not display umlauts and special characters correctly?
Every online merchant decides for himself how books should be displayed in the shop. Sometimes letters or special characters that only exist in one language are made internationally readable. Mostly, these are then displayed with the letters of the English alphabet. Unfortunately, this cannot be influenced.
What format should my book be?
There are standard formats in the book market. Based on these, many things are measured, for example:
Height and depth of a shelf in a bookstore
Shipping cartons
If you choose an unusual format for your book, booksellers may not like to order it. It doesn't fit on the shelf or in the usual shipping boxes. But as long as you print it just for you or only sell it in the tredition shop, you have no disadvantage with a completely individual size.
Amazon shows my book as out of stock. What is the reason for this?
We do not supply Amazon with books directly. This has several reasons.
Amazon charges up to 55% of the bookstore price as a discount. If a book costs €15, we then receive €6.30 after taxes. From that we are supposed to pay the printing costs, the shipping costs to Amazon, the handling and packaging, yours and our earnings. There we make a loss with each book.
Amazon requires delivery on commission. This means that Amazon orders books in any number, but does not pay for them until a customer has purchased them. Since Amazon has no significant costs for the order, they order in unusually high quantities. So they always have an attractive quantity in stock for the customer, but they don't have to pay for it - but we do. Amazon stocks about 400% of a projected week's worth. If a book sells 100 copies a week, Amazon orders 400 copies. If demand drops, we can retrieve the unpaid merchandise at our expense and try to sell elsewhere.
We are in favor of fair purchasing opportunities for all booksellers. Therefore, we sell either to booksellers directly or through wholesalers. All booksellers, large and small, receive the same conditions from us. Amazon's purchasing policy demands higher discounts. That is not fair. That's why we don't support it.
Amazon can therefore only purchase books for sale in bookstores with tredition via wholesalers. If the profits are too low for Amazon, books are displayed as "not available". For all other booksellers, our conditions are suitable. Feel free to explain this to your readers and then refer them to other booksellers. By the way, all these booksellers pay taxes in Germany and get by with moderate profits on books. Amazon does not pay taxes in Germany.
It only happens with a few books that they are shown as not available on Amazon. Upon request from authors, Amazon informs us that we must accept the above delivery conditions. Then the book will also be deliverable. This approach is becoming increasingly aggressive. Since we have no exclusivity, contract commitment periods or the like, any author is free to publish elsewhere because of this purchasing policy. For us and 99.9% of all authors, the more than 6,000 booksellers in German-speaking countries are sufficient as sales outlets. They are happy when you send your readers there.
Earnings
Why are my earnings different for my e-book?
For e-books, there are two different offers for readers: buying the e-book at a fixed price or reading it in a flat rate subscription model.
Purchase of the e-book at a fixed price: In the Project Calculator you set the selling price of your e-book yourself. E-book retailers, i.e. Amazon Kindle, Google, Apple and many national retailers offer your e-book at this price. The e-book retailers take a share of the selling price as their own earnings. This varies from 30 to actually 65% (!) depending on the retailer and sometimes on the store price. These conditions are set by the e-book retailers themselves. We have no influence on it. From what the e-book retailers pay after deducting their share, we distribute 70% to you. So there can be different earnings for the same e-book. Example: Your e-book costs 10,00 Euro without VAT. An e-book retailer keeps 35% for himself. Then he pays 65% or 6,50 Euro to us. From this you will receive 70%, that is 46% or 4,60 Euro. If your e-book is sold at a retailer who keeps 50%, only 50% will end up with us, from which you will receive 70% again. But that's only 35% or 3,50 Euro. The best thing to do is to direct all your readers to the tredition store. There you will also get 70%, but at the full price. That would be 7.00 euros, twice as much as the other e-book retailer.
Reading in a flat rate subscription modelWhen publishing your book as an e-book, you have the choice of whether your book should participate in flat rate offers or lending models. If you participate, the earnings will be quite different here as well. With flat rate offers, readers pay a monthly fee to the e-book provider. A portion of this fee is distributed to the self-publishers and book publishers whose books were read by subscribers during the billing period. The distribution is usually based on the number of pages read. Example: A flat rate provider has one million euros to distribute to self-publishers and book publishers per month. If subscribers have read a total of 20 million pages of all participating e-books, the provider distributes 0.05 euros per page read. Finally, the provider determines how many pages subscribers have read in your e-book during the period. If two subscribers have read your book with 200 pages completely and one subscriber has read half of your book, that is 500 pages in the period. You will then receive 500 * 0,05 Euro = 25 Euro for participating in the flat rate offer of this e-book provider. Lending or also called Onleihe models work the same way.
Why doesn't a sale of my book in a bookstore show up in my account?
Basically, every sale of your book will show up in your account. Depending on the distribution channel, there may be a delay of a few days before the sales figures are reported to us. We always show you the sales for books that we have delivered directly to book retailers and wholesalers. Wholesalers often buy in larger quantities to supply to book retailers on order. The reason for this is that wholesalers want to be able to ship to retailers quickly. You know this when you order a book from a bookseller, who in turn has to get it for you. Then the retailer buys from a wholesaler.
You might have the following case: a wholesaler orders ten copies from us and puts them in his warehouse. You see these ten sales in your account on a daily basis. Now, three weeks later, a friend of yours buys your book from a retailer online or around the corner. The retailer then orders from the wholesaler, where there are still a few copies of the order from the ten copies from three weeks ago. You don't see the retailer's sale to your friend in your account that day because the sale by us already happened three weeks ago and you've already been credited with earnings for it.
Am I liable for sales tax as an author?
For tax purposes, all authors are considered entrepreneurs. This means that all authors are theoretically liable to VAT. If the annual turnover is below certain minimum limits, the VAT liability can be waived. However, in case of doubt, you should ask a tax advisor about this.
Attention: VAT is not the same as income tax. In general, you are obliged to include all income from your work as an author in your income tax return.
Do I have to pay tax on my earnings?
You are required to declare your earnings as an author on your income tax return. Whether and how much income tax is then levied on it depends on your other income and costs associated with it.
Who sets the retail price of my book?
You determine the selling price of your book yourself. Depending on which materials you choose for the book and how high you set the retail price, this will determine your fee. You determine the sales price and your fee in the Project Calculator.
How much do I earn?
You determine your earnings per copy sold yourself, because you set the selling price yourself. The earnings are what remains after deduction of trade, production and transport costs. The amount of your earnings depends on this:
Selling price
Book type (softcover, hardcover, e-book, large print edition)
We pay out the fees monthly, as long as your earnings account shows at least 25 Euros. If you cancel your book project, we will of course pay out your earnings even if they are less than 25 euros.
On the first day of a calendar month we will send you an earnings statement for the previous month. We will pay you the earnings plus any VAT within 15 days.
Earnings for sales via the tredition store are always settled directly at the end of the month. Fees for sales via bookstores are settled after three months. Here we have to wait so long with the payment, because the book trade also pays our invoices only after three months.
You can find the overview of your sales in your account on the top left under the burger menu under "Sales". You can find your credits in your account on the top right under the avatar (the person icon) under "Credits".
Where can I see my earnings?
How many copies you have already sold, you can see under the item "Reports" in your account. The sales of printed books are usually displayed on a daily basis. For e-book sales, it can take a few weeks until the individual shops have sent us the sales figures.
How will my earnings be paid?
Depending on the country you specify in your withdrawal details, we offer you different options on how we transfer your earnings. For users with a payout address in the euro area, we offer SEPA bank transfers or PayPal. For users outside the Euro zone, we currently only pay the earnings to PayPal accounts.
How do I change my bank details?
Click on the avatar in the top right corner and then click on Cash Out Details.
How does tredition earn its money?
We earn our money by selling books to readers and to you! When someone orders a book from us or from a bookstore, we earn a share. This share is not a flat rate, but depends on many factors: e.g. sales in the trade or in the tredition shop, sales price, material of the book.
That's why we're constantly working on making it fun for you to create your book with us. In addition, we provide you with more and more tools so that you can market your book in the best possible way and thus not leave the book's success to chance.
Why is my earnings (in %) different for low and high price e-books?
For some e-book retailers, the earnings depend on the selling price of the e-book. A common limit is 9,99 € or $9.99. Below this limit you will get 70% earnings, above this limit only 35%. Therefore, if you choose a price above or below this limit, the earnings in the price calculator will jump.
Inner part
Which file formats can I upload?
Depending on the tools you want to use, you can upload different file formats.
tredition Text Designer
If you want to design your book with the tredition Text Designer, you can upload these file formats for the design of the interior and then edit them further:
docx (Microsoft)
doc (Microsoft)
odf (Open Office / Libre Office)
pages (Apple)
read pdf
epub
rft
You don't have to format your file before uploading it. That's the art of our text designer. So you don't need to resize your file to a size of a typical book.
You can also upload your own images for the title. You can upload these image/graphic file formats:
jpg
png
How can I embed fonts?
In your manuscript, fonts must be embedded so that your font can be read by printing presses.
You can find out how this works in your editing program here:
Google Docs (German version):
In Google Docs, fonts cannot be embedded. But don't worry: you can embed the fonts by printing your finished manuscript as a PDF. This can be done with the free program PDF24:
Install PDF24.
Now open your manuscript in Google Docs.
Hold down "Ctrl" and the "Shift" key and tap "P".
Select the option "PDF24 PDF" under "Select Printer".
Now click on the "Fonts" tab and check the "Embed Fonts" and "Subset Fonts" boxes.
Click on "Next" and save the file as usual.
Google Docs (English version):
Google Docs can't embed fonts. Don't worry - you can embed the fonts when you save your finished manuscript as a PDF. PDF24 is a good, free tool for that.
So what is the recommendation for the font size for the text of your large print edition?
The optimal font size for a large font output depends, among other things, on the selected font. There are fonts that are generally small and vice versa (almost like clothes ;-)). As a rule of thumb, we advise you to choose a font size between 15 and 19 points.
Does the number of sides have to be divisible by 4?
Yes, the number of pages must be divisible by four so that printing machines can process the file. But you don't have to worry about that at tredition. We provide this service for you. We check each document to see if the number of pages is divisible by four, and if not, we append so-called vacant pages.
How can I replace the inner part when I have corrected the proof print?
Can you create a book sentence for me?
Through our tredition services, you can either have a manual premium book typesetting or a text layout created for you in the tredition Text Designer. Just have a look at our page expert services and decide what is the best option for your book.
If you use our cover designer, you can start your cover design on a blank sheet of paper or use one of our many templates and completely customize it according to your wishes. If you want to create your cover with other programs, you upload a PDF with your cover. We will provide you with the specifications for this in your project. Or you can book a professional cover design via our expert services to this.
Can I use my own photos for my cover?
Yes, you can integrate them directly into cover templates in the tredition cover designer using drag & drop. You can also create your own cover design and use your photos there.
Does the book price have to be listed on the cover?
No. In fact, it's better if it's not specified, because that makes price promotions easier to implement, and it also avoids confusion when your book is sold in countries without fixed book prices.
Where do I get the measurements if I want to design the cover myself?
You can calculate the dimensions in two places. Either before starting the project under "Downloads" or in your book project at the "Cover => Prepare data".
In these two places you can calculate the dimensions for your different book types and download templates.
Why can't I fill in the back and spine with color?
To add a full area to the book cover, please proceed as follows:
Navigate to the tredition cover designer in your project, open the tab "Pattern" and drag & drop the element frame/area onto your cover. Drag it to the desired size at the corner points.
To colorize, click on the element that the corner points are active and then click on the icon for a color palette in the upper toolbar. Then you can set the background color. Alternatively you can open the item "Color palettes". Then all elements on the cover will be colored.
Move this element to the bottom of the "Layers" tab. Then all the other elements on your cover will be visible. This way you can place full color elements on the back and spine.
Will there be more cover templates?
Yes, we will gradually expand the variety of cover templates. However, this will probably only be the case in the course of 2022.
Why is the price no longer listed on the barcodes?
We sell the books of our authors not only in Germany, but worldwide. Even if you decide against international distribution (you can simply deactivate this in the "Publishing" step of your project), your book may still be bought abroad or ordered from abroad. This is because the wholesalers (bar assortments) through whom we sell your book also deliver to booksellers abroad. Each country in the EU has different VAT rates. This means that your sales price will also change. In addition, most countries do not have fixed book prices. In these countries, the bookseller himself sets the selling price and thus his own earnings. Therefore a price on the barcode is only misleading or even wrong.
What is definitely fixed is your earnings, which you have set in the project. Regardless of the sales price at which your book is sold, you will receive the same commission for every sale, no matter where, no matter at what retail price.
Is it possible to save a cover that you have designed based on a tredition template as a template in this design and how can you retrieve it for a new project?
Yes, this is possible! Please open the tab "Templates" and click the button "Save this design as a template". Then you can assign a name and save the design. If you want to reuse this template in a new project, navigate back to Templates and filter the template overview with the checkbox at the top to "Only my templates". Then you can reuse this template.
Can you design a cover for me?
With our tredition services you can easily book a professionally created cover. You have the choice to book 1-3 variants and give us all the important information about your briefing so that our design professionals create an individual cover for you. Just go to expert services and decide what is the right performance for you and your book.
marketing
Does tredition send out review copies?
You can send review copies to journalists or bloggers yourself by placing an order for the book in question. If we receive requests for review copies directly, we will forward them to you and you decide yourself whether you want to send a copy or send your e-book.
Does tredition send deposit copies to the German National Library?
We transmit every deposit copy in digital form to the German National Library.
Can I sign up my e-book for Kindle Deals or Kindle unlimited?
You can't submit an e-book to Kindle Deals. It can only be done by invitation from Amazon. If this is addressed to us, we will let you know and you decide whether you want to participate.
Kindle unlimited requires an exclusive offer on Amazon. We don't offer that because we believe in the wide availability of a book title.
How does your own author website work?
Your profile page in the tredition store serves as a showcase for authors to present themselves to interested readers. You can show all this to your readers:
Vita / Curriculum vitae
Photo
Inspiration / Motivation / Motto
Interview with you
Press kit
Newsroom with events, postings, current info about you or your books
your complete bibliography
We recommend that you always maintain it well. Because a meaningful page about you contributes to the sale of your book.
How to write the perfect author vita
Click on this Link to the shop and search for the respective name. Either click on the product detail page for the book. Then you can also click on the author name there. Or you click directly on the profile page. We don't have an overview page about all authors. There are simply so many people who have published with tredition that such a page would be confusing and offer little added value.
Production
Can I just have my book printed?
Yes, just choose the "Print Only" option in the project editor at the beginning. Then you do not publish your book project, but can print copies only for you.
Can I do a test print?
You can order a proof copy at any time. The price of the proof depends on the features of your book and costs the same as an author's copy later.
You can also order a proof of all book types for a book update after you have completed your changes.
What types of books are available at tredition?
Softcover with adhesive binding, spiral binding or stapled binding
Yes, for that you just set the release date a little bit into the future, e.g. 2 weeks ahead.
What is Print-on-Demand?
Print-on-demand means that books are not produced until an order for them has been received, e.g. from a bookseller. The opposite is edition printing, where a few thousand copies are usually pre-printed. We do not print any editions for our books, but work exclusively in print-on-demand, because print-on-demand is
Your books are produced by different printers, depending on the order route or country. In this way, we optimise the production time and reduce shipping distances. Since our printers have different printing machines, a book can look slightly different despite the same materials (e.g. type of paper).
However, this is not noticeable to the reader, as he usually only buys one copy. Qualitatively, the books are not different.

What is the difference between the paper types Text Print Standard and Text Print Premium?
Both paper grades Textdruck Standard and Textdruck Premium are particularly suitable for books with a high text content. For books that contain only text, Text Print Standard is perfectly adequate. For books that contain both text and illustrations, Text Print Premium may be more suitable. The difference in the two types of paper is that they are used in different printing processes. In the favorable Textdruck Standard, fine unprinted vertical lines can occur when printing large-area illustrations. With these so-called "missing jets", a printing point is simply omitted.
Books are printed at 300 dpi (dots per inch). On one inch (2.54 cm), 300 printing dots are set. One print dot has the width of 0.0085 cm (2.54 cm/ 300 dots). With text on a page, a missing print dot is not visible to the naked eye. With a full-surface image, however, it is. For example, if the image is completely black, the unprinted dot is visible as a line from top to bottom. The omitted print dot is always omitted at the same place on this page, so it appears as a line. Therefore, we recommend you to choose Text Print Premium. Here this does not happen.
Can I create a book in landscape format?
Books in landscape format we offer in some dimensions. The minimum height is 17.0 cm. The smallest landscape format is therefore 17.0 x 17.0 cm, which is also the smallest square format. You can go up to 21.0 cm in width. This makes the largest landscape format 21.0 x 17.0 cm (width x height).
Why does the print quality differ?
At tredition, we only print all print editions of books once we have received an order for them. This is called "print-on-demand". The logistical performance of our printing partners is impressive. In the complex production structures, it can happen in rare cases that customers complain about a book. This is very annoying and everyone involved does their utmost to ensure that this does not happen.
Yes, you can publish book projects by or for other authors, as long as you have permission from the authors. If you run a publishing house and publish your authors' book projects with tredition, this is the usual way anyway. Please note that you are responsible for the publication. If you publish book projects that violate applicable laws, you are fully liable for them.
Is there a contract for my book project?
Yes, whether you publish your book project yourself at tredition or just print it for yourself, our collaboration is governed by a project contract. We do not conclude this contract for every new book project, but it is part of our General terms and conditions (AGB). In the terms and conditions everything legal about your book project is regulated.
What is the notice period for book projects?
You can cancel your book project at any time. The cancellation period is two weeks. Upon receipt of your cancellation, we will immediately begin to remove your book from distribution, provided you have published it with us. For print-only book projects, we will also delete your book project immediately.
When is the project contract concluded?
The project contract is concluded when you complete it in the project editor and publish it or place an order for copies. The project contract is part of our General terms and conditions (AGB).
How do I cancel a book project?
Select the book project under "Projects". In the project overview you will find a yellow circle with three dots at the bottom. Click on it and then select "Delete book project".
What rights do I give up?
You do not give any rights to tredition! You only grant us non-exclusive Rights (so-called exploitation rights), so that we can do for you what you instruct us to do: print and/or publish.
This means that you can also print and publish your book elsewhere at the same time, if that makes sense. If you are the author of a book, all copyrights always remain with you anyway. This is worldwide uniform copyright.
What legal aspects do I need to consider in the content of my book?
Trouble can fly your way here:
Personal rights: You write about real people who are not "public figures" and don't get their permission beforehand.
Quotations: You copy passages of text without crediting the original author.
Applicable law: The content of your book is glorifying violence, discriminatory, pornographic or similar and violates applicable laws.
Images: You are using images for which you do not have permission to use. This is the case for most images you would download from the internet.
Imprint: A legally correct imprint must be included.
This list is not exhaustive and certainly not comprehensive. We have extensive blog articles on each of these topics on the subject of "Legal" where you can read all the background information.
What is an imprint and what should it contain?
The easiest way is to create your imprint with the tredition imprint generator. You can find it in the project editor in the first step under "ISBN & Imprint".
You can find all the background information on why a book must have an imprint in our blog article "imprint„.
Is a second edition of books (with existing ISBN) possible?
This is generally possible. It only has to be ensured that the ISBN has been removed from the market and is not still distributed via other distributors. Otherwise, chaos is inevitable, because the wholesaler would then no longer know where to order.
Who pays for misprints or defective copies?
At tredition there is no publication fee or the like. We live solely from the sales of the books. That's why we work exclusively with printers who print high-quality books. Nevertheless, misprints can occur in such a process. For these, tredition is liable externally. Internally, we pass this defect on to our printers. So if there is ever a misprint, please contact us. We will take care of the exchange of the copies. Here you can find our Contact form.

How long does editing or proofreading take?

Through our expert services you have access to our large and professional network, and you will quickly receive a concrete answer to your booking.
How much do the services cost?
Services such as proofreading and editing are usually charged on the basis of standard pages. A standard page contains 180 words. All prices can be found on the Services page. By clicking on "Order services" you can also calculate the price in our calculator.
Here's how to calculate your word count:
Open the current file of your book in Word or OpenOffice.
Click on "Words" at the bottom of the footer and read the number of words.
The formula for calculating the standard pages in this example is: 54,748 / 180 = 304.
