Ulrike Gaate

Multifaceted pianist ULRIKE GAATE from Germany is one of the few women in Europe who have committed themselves to boogie-woogie & blues piano. She received a classical music education from the age of four, followed by lessons in piano improvisation from Professor Herbert Wiedemann at the University of the Arts in Berlin. She has extensive experience in musical theatre, various creative projects with rock bands, as well as spoken word and music performances. She completed her online studies “Blues and Rock Keyboard Techniques” at Berklee College of Music, Boston, USA, and won the C. Bechstein Award with her “Ulrike Gaate Trio”. Ulrike holds a PhD in natural sciences and when she is not playing the piano, she works as a university lecturer and author. www.gaateboogie.de

The nimble-fingered and powerful-voiced JAN PRESTON, known as Australia’s Queen of Boogie Piano, was born in New Zealand and began her musical life as a classical pianist. After moving to New York in the late 1970’s Jan was turned on to Rhythm and Blues, hearing pianists there such as Professor Longhair. She returned to NZ, formed a band who quickly had a number-one hit, and in 1980 moved her music career to Sydney Australia where she has been resident ever since. As well as a pianist, singer and songwriter, Jan is one of the country’s leading film composers. She has won 2 “Best Film Music” awards, 3 “Best Australian Female Blues Artist” Awards, written Television themes, featured on TV and Radio, and played supports for blues acts such as Robert Cray and Bo Diddley. Currently she plays festivals and concerts throughout Australia, NZ and Europe, tours her own shows, composes for films, and performs original music for silent movies.
